Plate Calculator

Enter a target weight — see exactly which plates to load on each side of the bar.

The total weight you want on the bar, including the bar itself.

Enter a target weight to see the plates for each side.

Plate Guide

What a plate calculator does

A barbell is loaded evenly on both ends, so half of the plate weight goes on each side. A plate calculator does that split for you: enter the total you want on the bar, and it shows exactly which plates to slide onto each sleeve.

Plate Guide

How to load a barbell

Start from the bar’s own weight, subtract it from your target, then divide what’s left by two — that’s the load per side. Put the heaviest plates on first, closest to the collar, and work down to the smallest.

This calculator uses the fewest plates possible for each side and lists them heaviest-first, so the loadout matches how you’d actually build the bar.

Plate Guide

Standard bar weights

A standard Olympic barbell is 20 kg (about 45 lb). Women’s bars are 15 kg (about 35 lb). Always include the bar in your target — 100 kg on the bar means the bar plus 80 kg of plates, not 100 kg of plates.

Plate Guide

Standard plate weights and colors

Metric gyms stock 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5 and 1.25 kg plates; pound gyms typically stock 45, 35, 25, 10, 5 and 2.5 lb. Many commercial kg plates are color-coded — red 25, blue 20, yellow 15, green 10, white 5 — which is why the visual here is colored to match.

If your target can’t be built exactly from standard plates, the calculator shows the closest you can load without going over.

Questions, answered.

How do I load a barbell?

Subtract the bar weight from your target, divide the rest by two, and load that amount on each side — heaviest plates nearest the collar. The calculator does the split and picks the fewest plates for you.

How much does the bar weigh?

A standard Olympic barbell is 20 kg (~45 lb); a women’s bar is 15 kg (~35 lb). Enter the bar you’re using — the target weight always includes the bar.

Why does it show plates per side?

A barbell is loaded symmetrically, so each side carries half the plate weight. Showing per-side plates is exactly what you slide onto one sleeve, then mirror on the other.

What if I can’t hit the exact weight?

If your target isn’t a whole number of available plates, the calculator loads the closest weight without going over and tells you how far short it is.

What do standard plates weigh?

Metric: 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5 and 1.25 kg. Pound: 45, 35, 25, 10, 5 and 2.5 lb. The calculator assumes a full standard set of each.

Should I use kg or lb plates?

Use whichever your gym stocks — the plate denominations differ between systems, so switch the unit and the calculator swaps the bar and plate set to match.
