  • the variation, such as high-bar squat rather than simply “squat”;

Week four is not regression: load increased while reps remained inside the target range.

Track RPE or RIR Alongside Reps

Two identical sets can represent different levels of progress:

  • Week 1: 80 kg × 6 at 9 RPE
  • Week 4: 80 kg × 6 at 7.5 RPE

The weight and reps did not change, yet the second set was probably less demanding. Without an effort rating, the log hides that improvement.

RIR records estimated repetitions remaining; RPE expresses set difficulty on a 1–10 scale. Choose one consistently. Ratings improve when entered immediately after the set.

Measure the Right Kind of Progress

Estimated strength

Estimated 1RM translates sets with different weights and reps into a trend. It remains an estimate—not a promise of today’s true maximum—so compare similar rep ranges and execution.

Weekly productive volume

Track hard sets when the program changes volume. More tonnage is not automatically better; it may rise because you added low-value fatigue. Use sets per muscle per week to assess more work.

Execution quality

A deeper squat, longer pause, controlled eccentric, or reduced assistance may be progression when that standard is deliberate. Add a brief note or treat the stricter version as a separate exercise so the history remains honest.

Do Not Compare Performances That Are Not Comparable

Progressive overload tracking fails when unlike sessions are treated as one continuous test.

Avoid direct comparisons between:

  • dumbbell and barbell versions;
  • full and partial range of motion;
  • strict press and push press;
  • different machines or cable stacks;
  • a lift performed first and the same lift performed after several fatiguing exercises;
  • sets with substantially different rest periods;
  • bodyweight movements when body weight changed materially and was not recorded.

Chasing a PR in every session

Sleep, stress, exercise order, and daily variation affect performance. Progress is a trend, not a requirement to win every workout.

Increasing several variables at once

Adding weight, sets, reps, and reducing rest simultaneously makes the source of progress—or fatigue—impossible to identify. Change one main variable at a time.

Logging only the best set

Your top set matters, but later sets reveal repeatability and fatigue. Record every programmed working set.

Counting worse technique as progress

More load with shortened range or outside assistance may be a different performance. Establish standards before numbers become emotionally important.

Treating volume load as the final score
