The “combination” option is often the most practical. You do not need to choose one format for every exercise in a program.

How to Build a Productive Superset

Start with pairing logic, not novelty.

1. Protect the priority movement

If improving the barbell bench press is the goal, do not pair it with hard dips, push-ups, or triceps extensions. Pair it with a low-interference row—or keep the bench as straight sets.

2. Keep the equipment realistic

The best theoretical pair is useless if the cable station is across the gym and usually occupied. Good supersets are physically workable.

3. Write the rest rule

“No rest” is rarely the best instruction. Use a clear pattern:

A1. Dumbbell incline press → A2. Chest-supported row → rest 90–120 seconds → repeat.

The rest belongs after the pair. If the second exercise is much easier, it can function as active time before the next set; that does not mean recovery is unlimited.

4. Keep set targets independent

Log each exercise’s load, reps, and effort separately. A decline in row reps does not change the number of pressing sets you performed.
