The best next step is not automatically to lower the weight: compare rest time, RIR, exercise order, and your previous sessions before changing anything.

Cause 1: Your Rest Period Is Too Short for the Task

Rest time directly affects repeat-set performance. Heavy compounds and hard low-rep sets generally need more recovery than isolation work or deliberately dense circuits.

Keep the exercise, load, and first-set effort similar for two sessions. Add 30–60 seconds of rest in the second. If later reps improve without greater effort, short rest was contributing. Change one main variable at a time.

Cause 2: The First Set Was Too Close to Failure

The first set can look impressive and still sabotage later work. Technical failure creates more immediate fatigue than stopping with one to three controlled reps remaining.
